Doc Allen

2011 Legendary Cowboy Doc AllenJames F. Allen, known to the Basin as “Doc” Allen was born in Phoenix Arizona where he grew until his family moved to Roosevelt, Utah in 1958. This was the beginning of his roots in the Basin. Doc graduated from Union High School and went to Utah State where he received his bachelors degree. He then went on to get his doctorate at the University of Utah and completed a Rotating Internship Residency at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle Washington. He is boarded in family practice and has taken many refresher courses in surgery, obstetrics and other specialty areas. He has served as an associate clinical professor for the University of Utah Medical School for many years.

Not too many surgeons have been calf ropers. His background made him a celebrity when he was chosen to be highlighted on a TV show called “Sporting Life”. The camera crew came an not only filmed him here, but as he competed in rodeos. He was later asked to be on the “Today Show” to talk about his passion for medicine and rodeo. Doc has competed in rodeo’s for nearly 4 decades. He competed in rodeos from Los Angeles to Cheyenne to Calgary. His passion is still there and now his sport is Team Roping.

Doc raises corriente cattle as well as quarter horses and paints in addition he raised a good family. His family is the most important thing he has and they all live on the ranch north of Vernal except for one daughter. His wife Dixie is the love of his life and was his traveling partner for years where she was a barrel racer. She to has been an icon in the community. Doc and Dixie were married in 1964 and are still going strong. Their children are Cassie, Brandie, Cricket and Kaydee which has given them 10 grandchildren.

Doc played a big role with the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo. He was the president and active committeeman for years. He was involved long before we got Western Park. His accomplishments are great. He has been president of the Chamber of Commerce, President of Rural Financial Assistance Committee of Utah, President of Uintah Basin
